This Week in College Football

Last Week: 11-1 (perfection thwarted by Ricky Stanzi’s complete ineptness at running a 2-minute drill)
It’s pretty late & I’ve got to be up in the morning so I’ll make these picks brief (apparently that didn't happen, gonna be a long Saturday...).
Top 10:
· #1 Auburn at Ole Miss-Jeremiah Masoli must hate himself for blowing a chance at national stardom leading the Oregon Ducks on a quest for a title. Instead he’s stuck on a mediocre Ole Miss team & facing off against the most dynamic QB in the nation, Auburn’s Cam Newton. Ole Miss has the potential to be dangerous but, Auburn’s offense should be too much & the streak of #1’s going down should end.
Auburn 37, Ole Miss 24
· #5 Michigan State at # 18 Iowa-Both these teams played tough games that went down to the final minutes last week. MSU fell way down against Northwestern only to climb back up & hold onto the win. Iowa, on the other hand, blew a late lead & saw their quarterback self-destruct in the last 2 minutes. Despite the different showings I still believe in this Iowa team & they’re at home so they’re the pick.
Iowa 27, Michigan State 17
· #6 Missouri at #14 Nebraska-Mizzou is coming off a huge victory over #1 Oklahoma (called it!) & my pre-season #1 Nebraska came back strong from their loss to Texas to hang 51 on Oklahoma State. These two offer differing styles as Mizzou likes to air it out while Nebraska likes to keep it on the ground with QB Taylor Martinez. This game should be a thriller & I like Braska to edge it out on their home turf.

Braska 30, Mizzou 24
· #8 Utah at Air Force-Since their 27-24 OT win over Pitt in week one Utah has been laying a beat down on their opponents scoring at least 30 points in every game & giving up more than 14 only once. Air Force is coming off 2 straight losses including a 38-7 loss to #5 TCU that saw Air Forces top ranked rushing attack stymied. I don’t think Utah’s defense is quite as good as TCU’s, & Air Force will have home field so… Air Force won’t get completely blown out!
Utah 33, Air Force 17
PAC-10:
· #2 Oregon at USC-Quick Quiz: How many teams has Oregon played with a winning record? If you guessed one you win! That’s right, their home win over Stanford’s is their only one over a winning team. The combined record of their other 6 opponents? A putrid 11-32 (including a 1-AA team). If you’re guessing I think Oregon hasn’t proven themselves, is currently overrated & has no business being ahead Boise & TCU you’re correct! As for USC they finally got it together against Cal 2 weeks ago & have had an extra week to game plan for this game, couple that with a standout QB in Matt Barkley & a ban from postseason play making this their biggest game of the year & you’ve got an upset brewing.
USC 41, Oregon 37
· California at Oregon State-This game’s pretty simple. You’ve got the best coach in the PAC-10 (OSU’s Mike Riley) working off a bye week & you’ve got a Cal team that’s 0-3 on the road.
OSU 30, Cal 20
· Washington State at Arizona State-Last week Washington State failed yet again to win a PAC-10 game while ASU set a new low bar for their season with a 50-17 loss at call (signing Dennis Erickson’s death certificate). So yes, this may be the game between the 2 worst teams in the conference. If it were in Spokane I’d probably pick the Cougars, since it’s not though I’ll take the underachieving Sun Devils (seriously their defense needs to realize the season didn’t end a month ago… Or maybe the offense just turns the ball over too much… Or maybe they’re just crap…).
ASU 30, WSU 23
· #13 Stanford at Washington-As evidenced by last week’s 44-14 thrashing at the hands of the Wildcats Washington does not have a very good defense (102nd in points allowed). You know what Stanford’s ranked in points forced? 5th. Andrew Luck should have all day to find his receivers & this could turn ugly.
Stanford 38, Washington 24
The Arizona Game:
· #15 Arizona at UCLA-Matt Scott played unbelievably well last week against Washington & he’s expected to get the start here. Another thing that should be expected is a win by the Wildcats. Despite their shocking win at Texas UCLA is not a good team. They rank 102nd in total offense, 95th in points scored, 89th in points allowed, they’ve given up 300 yards of passing in two of their last three games, & allowed 574 yards on the ground these last 2 weeks. If that weren’t enough the Bruins starting quarterback, Kevin Prince, is out for the season with an injury. The only way the Cats can lose is if they look ahead to next week’s matchup at Stanford, come out flat, & commit turnovers. That’s actually the only way this game is even close. Look for the Cats to take control early & try to work in Foles for a few drives late in the game.
Arizona 34, UCLA 16
